Commentary | Copy from Bouttats' plate (Amberes: Verdussen, 1672 - 1673). Well balanced composition with two different scenes. The first one in the foreground: left, don Quixote knelt down and one peasant girl with her donkey; center, "Dulcinea" and her donkey; right, Sancho Panza knelt down and another peasant girl with her donkey. The second scene in the background: the three peasant girls flee from don Quixote and one of them falls from her donkey, showing her ass (humorous). |
Notes | In Cushing's copy, the Part II frontispiece is missing. It was the same one done for Part I and was signed by M. van der Gucht. It contained the figures of don Quixote and Rocinante, Sancho and his donkey, two statues (Amadis and Orlando) and two medallions (Dulcinea and Merlin). M. van der Gucht copied Savery's Part I frontispiece (Dordrecht: Savery, 1657), including Merlin's medallion from Savery's Part II frontispiece. |
