Commentary | Copy from Savery's composition (Dordrecht: Savery, 1657; Brussels: Mommarte, 1662; Amberes: Verdussen, 1672 - 1673). In the foreground, several shepherds are preparing Grisóstomo's grave. The background is divided in two parts: below, the dead shepherd, his friend Ambrosio, Vivaldo reading Grisóstomo's song and don Quixote; above, Marcela's appearance and speech. Marcela's figure copies Saint Gabriel's traditional image.
The engraving is crude and the landscape not much detailed. |
Notes | Previous to this illustration, there should be another two: "The Unfortunate Adventure of the Merchants. Don Quixote carry'd home upon an afs" (f.p. 21) and "Don Quixote Encounters the Windmills and ffights y Bifcainer" (f.p. 37).
