Commentary As usual in Clark's illustrations, the scene follows a diagonal: from the left background (the galley slaves throwing stones) to the right foreground (don Quixote and Sancho protecting themselves).
The expressions of don Quixote and Rocinante are remarkable, and Sancho's figure too; his figure has been created with aquatint and color, almost without drawing lines.
Acceptable hand-coloring.
Notes 1 - This plate was first used for London: McLean, 1819.
2 - Placed as frontispiece.
