Commentary | Well-known scene; the basic composition, but inverted, appears in London: Tonson, 1738 by Vanderbank. Don Quixote knelt down before the three peasant girls while Sancho holds the reins of Dulcinea's donkey and introduces her to don Quixote.
Sancho's figure, with his back turned on the viewer, is remarkable; well-shaded and drawn. Dulcinea is dressed as a 19th century English young lady, not as a peasant girl. |
Notes | Cushing Library also has a set including this illustration with some differences in color. |
