Commentary | After asking Sancho to Maese Pedro's ape what is his wife doing, the monkey jumps onto Maese Pedro's shoulder to "tell" him the answer; don Quixote and others observe them.
Don Quixote's figure is remarkable, sat and leaned on his sword looking at the ape with attention; Maese Pedro with a patch on his left eye, accurate to Cervantes' text. Interest in detail and accurate setting (clothes, architecture...). |
Notes | 1 - This moment of the episode has been represented in very few editions (see also Madrid: Sancha, 1798 by Alcántara and Moreno); it is more usual the representation of don Quixote destroying the theater since Savery (Dordrecht: Savery, 1657)(see also Madrid: Imprenta Real, 1797 by Antonio Rodríguez). |
