Commentary | During the night at the inn, Maritornes (one-eyed; accurate to Cervantes' text) enters don Quixote's room looking for a muleteer (on the left); also Sancho sleeping in the room.
Don Quixote believes that Maritornes is the landlord's daughter and tries to embrace her. Illustration with very remarkable figures (the muleteer and Maritornes); don Quixote looks extremely young. |
Notes | 1 - Dated in Rome, 1833.
2 - Cushing Library owns a second copy of this illustration (same plate) with a different inscription: "Veglia l'Ispano Eroe, che in mente esprime / Qual sia l'idea della beltà sublime. / Crede mirar colei, che il cuor gli adesca / E non vede, che passa una fantesca". |
