Commentary | Well-known scene with the basic characters: don Quixote, knelt and still with his helmet, knighted by the innkeeper, holding a sword and a book; doña Molinera and doña Tolosa, with don Quixote's sword; and the boy with the candle; also a woman at the window and some men.
The figures of doña Tolosa and doña Molinera are resolved as idealized and Romantic images. Good light and shadow effects (produced by the candle and the moon among clouds). Faces are excellently drawn and engraved (see the innkeeper, woman at the window...). |
Notes | 1 - Good copy after Robert Smirke's illustration for London: Cadell & Davies, 1818. |
