Commentary | Don Quixote defeating the Knight of the Mirrors (Sansón Carasco).
In the background, Sancho and the Knight of the Mirrors' squire (Tomé Cecial)?. Drawing and engraving done to look archaic. |
Notes | 1 - Copied after the illustration for Barcelona: Juan Jolis, 1755 (and 1762), copied after Madrid: Antonio Sanz, 1735, badly copied after Diego de Obregón’s illustration (Madrid: Andrés García de la Iglesia, 1674).
2 – In the early editions, the same wooden block was also used to represent "Don Quixote defeated by the Knight of the White Moon" (64:2), so the characters in the background are Sancho, don Antonio and the viceroy 14:2); in the current edition, different illustrations (with light changes) have been drawn for each chapter. 3 - Obregón did not illustrate episode 14:2. 4 - It has not been copied the illustration for chapter 14:2 that appeared in Madrid: Antonio Sanz, 1735. |
