Commentary | Characters are divided in three groups:
On the right, the main one; surrounding the enchanted head (as a Roman bust), don Quixote thoughtful, Sancho astonished, don Antonio and two friends. On the left, in the foreground and in the background, two more groups that balance the composition (don Antonio's wife and friends). Well-detailed representation of a 18th century bourgeois French house (paintings, furniture, sculptures, carpets...). Theatrical scene with excellent drawing and engraving. |
Notes | 1 - From set "Sold by G. Vander Gucht in Queen Street Bloomsbury" (London, c. 1735 or later); numbered as plate 24.
2 - Copy engraved by Gerard van der Gucht? after Coypel's illustration (Paris: Surugue, c. 1735); the composition has been turned in comparison with Coypel's, but they both have the same large horizontal format. |
