Commentary | In the center, Sancho, framed by two columns and one large curtain, with the secretary and the majordomo.
At each side, one group of characters (one with the accused man and other with the accusing one). Great and theatrical setting; perfectly-balanced composition. The stolen coins have just been discovered into a walking stick; Sancho looks at the accused man (right) out of the corner of his eye. Excellent drawing and engraving. |
Notes | 1 - From set "Sold by G. Vander Gucht in Queen Street Bloomsbury" (London, c. 1731-43 or later); numbered as plate 23.
2 - Copy engraved by Gerard van der Gucht? after Coypel's illustration (Paris: Surugue, c. 1731-43); the composition has been turned in comparison with Coypel's, but they both have the same large horizontal format. |
