Commentary | Sancho, pointing to don Quixote, introduces him to the Duchess, who rides a white horse and holds a goshawk (accurate to Cervantes' text).
Don Quixote's figure, in the background, is bad. Just one maiden accompanies the Duchess; in other illustrations, her retinue is larger. Since Paris: Surugue, 1723, this gallant scene, with not many changes, is habitual in 18th and 19th centuries editions. Engraving of great quality. Drawing with some light disproportions (between the Duchess and her horse, for example) and some gestures are artificial (maiden), but good as a whole. |
Notes | 1 - From set "Sold by G. Vander Gucht in Queen Street Bloomsbury" (London, c. 1725 or later); numbered as plate 10.
2 - Copy engraved by Gerard van der Gucht? after Coypel's illustration (Paris: Surugue, 1723); the composition has been turned in comparison with Coypel's, but they both have the same large horizontal format. |
