Commentary | In the center of the composition, don Quixote in complete armor and receiving his lance and shield from Sancho; behind them, the allegory of Folly holding a jester scepter and Dulcinea's portrait and wearing feathers on her head (symbol of madness).
On the right, Rocinante, Sancho's donkey, a mill wheel (29:2) and a windmill (8:1); in the foreground, chivalry books and a pan with a chicken (20:2). On drapery suspended across the design: "HISTOIRE DE FAMEUX DON QUIXOTE DE LA MANCHE". Well-conceived frontispiece; drawing and engraving are acceptable. |
