Commentary | Well-known scene since Savery (Dordrecht: Savery, 1657).
Well-resolved composition; don Quixote attacks Maese Pedro's theater before an astonished public. On the left, Maese Pedro appearing from inside the theater and his servant(?) running away. Drawing and engraving with little quality. Deficient printing/preservation. |
Notes | 1 - This illustration is not copied after Lebarbier and Lefebvre's designs for Paris: Didot-Deterville, 1799 (as all the other vignettes are), but after Antonio Carnicero's illustration for Madrid: Ibarra, 1780, copied with many fewer details and turned.
2 - It has replaced Lebarbier's illustration "Basile, dit-elle, Basile, recevez ma main & ma foi". 3 - Placed as frontispiece. 4 - Placed in the upper left corner, but it should appear on the right, after "Don Quixote encounters the man of the lances at the inn". |
