Commentary | Sancho and don Quixote return to their village.
In the foreground, Sancho is welcome by his wife and daughter (realistic figures). Sancho's donkey carries the clothes of Altisidora's episode (the mitre should be a capirote with painted devils). In the background, don Quixote, the priest, the barber and the housekeeper. As an habitual anecdotal detail in Hayman's illustrations, there is one dog. Quite acceptable engraving, but lacking detail. |
Notes | 1 - Turned copy after Francis Hayman's design (London: Millar, 1755).
2 - Placed as frontis in vol. III, but it belongs to vol. IV. 3 - Unsigned. |
