Commentary | Well-known scene since Savery (Dordrecht: Savery, 1657), but now the composition has been turned.
In the foreground, don Quixote and Rocinante fallen on the ground; Sancho arrives from the background to help him. In the background, the bojiganga stealing Sancho's donkey and the cart with actors (Death, Devil, King and Knight). The engraving is not too much good; the movements are not resolved quite well. |
Notes | 1 - Copy after N. Cobo's illustration for Madrid: Imprenta de Vega, 1804, which was also a copy after Antonio Rodríguez' illustration for Madrid: Imprenta Real, 1797.
2 - Before this illustration, there were two other plates in 1797 edition: "Con la oferta del Bachiller convence D. Quixote á Sancho de que no le faltarían escuderos" and "Arrodillase D. Quixote delante de la supuesta Dulcinea"; they have not been included in 1808 edition. |
