Commentary Cervantes' portrait in an oval frame surrounded by garlands and a laurel wreath.
Underneath, usual iconographic elements: sword and shield (Cervantes as a soldier); comedy mask, lyre, flute, quill, Don Quixote, La Galatea, Persiles, Sonetos and Novelas ejemplares (Cervantes as a poet and a writer).
Portrait based on an oil canvas attributed to Alonso del Arco (maybe a copy after the original by Jáuregui or Pacheco done during Cervantes' life).
The Spanish Royal Academy obtained this portrait from the honorific academician Count of Águila (Sevilla).
Notes 1 - Process reproduction of portrait published in Madrid: Ibarra, 1780.
