Commentary | During Grisóstomo's burial, the shepherdess Marcela appears to defend herself; don Quixote, Sancho, Ambrosio, Vivaldo and other shepherds listen to her.
Hogarth has not placed Marcela at an upper position (as she appears in traditional compositions and accurate to Cervantes' text), but at the same level as the other characters. The engraving has reproduced with great quality Hogarth's drawing skill. Vanderbank's illustration (London: Tonson, 1738) is more accurate to Cervantes' text. |
Notes | 1 - Same plate first engraved for Hogarth Illustrated (London: J. & J. Boydel, 1798, vol. 3).
2 - Re-engraved copy after Hogarth's illustration for London: Tonson, 1738; this is one of the 6 illustrations rejected by Carteret and Oldfield. |
