Commentary | Don Quixote, sane and calm, dictates his last will to a notary (foreground). In the background, the housekeeper, the niece, Sansón Carrasco, the barber, the priest and Sancho Panza; Sancho in a very secondary position.
Not too much dramatic scene; just the housekeeper and the niece crying. Good composition, a bit theatrical. |
Notes | Copied from Antonio Carnicero and Fernando Selma's illustration (Madrid: Ibarra, 1780) with little changes: two candles over the table of the notary have been eliminated; now, a lamp appears on the left, so the general lighting has been changed.
Paton Thomson (London, c. 1750 – ¿?, after 1821): Engraver. He was well-known because of his engravings of famous actresses in their leading roles, as Kemble or Kean (Benezit X, 163). |
