Commentary | Well known scene. At the inn courtyard, the innkeeper knights don Quixote, knelt before him. Also doña Tolosa (with a sword), doña Molinera (with the spurs) and the boy holding a candle.
Scene several times previously represented. Forced drawing and some details are not too much correct. |
Notes | Copied from José del Castillo and Gerónimo Gil's illustration (Madrid: Ibarra, 1780), excepting the figure of doña Tolosa; this figure has been copied from Coypel's design (Paris: Surugue, 1724; London: Knaplock, 1725; London: Walthoe, 1731; London; Van der Gutch, c. 1735). The French style of this figure clearly contrasts with the whole illustration (Spanish and realistic).
James Neagle (London, c. 1760 – Philadelphia, 1822): Burin engraver. He took part in John Boydell’s “Shakespeare Gallery” (set of 97 engravings by different engravers), engraved plates for Murphy’s “Arabian antiquities of Spain” (1816) and engraved Woolley and Smirke’s designs. He engraved religious scenes too (Benezit VII, 670). |
