Commentary | The captive, Ruy Pérez de Viedma, ties his letter to the string hold by Zoraida, whose hand appears through the window.
The scene (it should be a baño in Algiers) has not been set accurately; it is more English than Arabic. Good drawing and engraving. In an ornamental and architectural frame with Bacchus' symbols (thyrsus, grapevine leaves...) and a book (references to Comedy); the whole illustration has got a remarkable decorative effect. |
Notes | 1 - It includes indication "Vide Vol. II. Page 162".
2 - Dated in May 6, 1797. 3 – In other copies, with the same caption and frame, for p. 235 (1797) (Ashbee). |
