Commentary | Don Quixote, fallen on the ground, fighting with goatherd Eugenio; meanwhile, a servant of the canon of Toledo seizes Sancho to prevent him from helping his master.
The priest, barber and others observe the scene. The illustration is not too much accurate; it should be set in a landscape during a country-meal, not at an inn; those two female figures on the left should not appear either. The image refers without a doubt to chapter 52:2, but it has been resolved with elements that remind Agramant's Camp scene (barber basin, packsaddle, the innkeeper's wife and her daughter or Maritornes...). Drawing and etching are excellent; notice the expressions and gestures of don Quixote and Eugenio; notice also the different use of etching for foreground figures (more detailed), middle ground (less) and background and setting (sketched). |
