Commentary | Two Duke's servants beat don Quixote; doña Rodríguez remains crouched behind the bed.
Well-drawn and detailed figures; good gestures and expressions; don Quixote's figure is especially remarkable. |
Notes | 1 - Dated in Rome, 1834.
2 - This illustration is quite unclear; the previous plate (61) refers to chapter 58:2 and the next one (63) refers to chapter 60:2, so this plate (62) should refer to chapter 59:2, where don Quixote and Sancho meet don Juan and don Jerónimo and talk about Avellaneda's book, but there is no scene in this chapter that can be related to this illustration. On the other hand, the only character with spectacles is doña Rodríguez, so she is the figure here represented, but she and don Quixote were not beaten by male servants, but by Duchess' maidens. |
