Commentary | Basilio defeats Camacho while their companions continue fencing(?).
The illustration is a very free interpretation of Cervantes' text and totally un-accurate; this scene never takes place because don Quixote stops the fighting; Basilio appears disguised as an Anglican priest (notice the cushion used as belly); maybe, this plate has been re-used from a different novel. Drawing and engraving with good details; notice the shading in trees, architectures in the background, clothes... The ornamental frame includes arms and a mask; good decorative effect. |
Notes | Wrongly placed in part I; it should appear in Chap. IV, Book II, between pp. 328 and 329 in part II.
The plate is not signed either by the illustrator or by the engraver, but Río y Rico attributes it to Riley and Scott, who sign the frontispiece. The illustrator's signature seems to be erased. It is dated on April 29, 1794. |
