Commentary | In this chapter (42:2), according to Cervantes' text, the priest introduces Zoraida and the captive, followed by Dorotea, Luscinda and doña Clara to the judge Ruy Pérez de Viedma; in the illustration, it only appears a man (not a priest) with four ladys, all well-dressed in 18th century English clothes.
The illustration is a very free interpretation of Cervantes' text; maybe, it has been re-used from a different novel. The frame includes symbols of Love, Folly and Comedy; good decorative effect. The engraving is not too much good. |
Notes | The plate is not signed either by the illustrator or by the engraver, but Río y Rico attributes it to Riley and Scott, who sign the frontispiece.
It is dated on March 22, 1794. |
