Commentary | At the Duke's palace, Sancho Panza argues with doña Rodríguez because the squire has asked her to take care of his donkey; a lackey observes them frightened.
The illustration is a very free interpretation of Cervantes' text; Sancho has been represented as never before (bald, old and dressing as a gentleman), doña Rodríguez is strangling him with a chain and the setting is totally English; maybe, it has been re-used from a different novel. Good drawing and engraving, but the illustration is absolutely un-accurate. The ornamental frame includes arms, a drum and a bugle; good decorative effect. |
Notes | Wrongly placed in part I; it should appear in Chap. XIV, Book II, between pp. 362 and 363 in part II.
It appears part of a signature; although it is quite unreadable, it does not seem to be Riley or Scott, who sign the frontispiece. Río y Rico attributes them all the illustrations. It is dated on March 8, 1794. |
