Commentary | Copy after the portrait designed by José del Castillo and engraved by Manuel Salvador Carmona for Madrid: Ibarra, 1780 based on a painting attributed to Alonso del Arco (donated by the Count of Aguilar to the Spanish Royal Academy; maybe a copy of some painting done during Cervantes' life); now inverted and without symbolic elements (just two laurel branches).
Perfect, clean and precise engraving; fine lines (burin or etching) for grained marmor. |
Notes | 1 - The painting attributed to Alonso del Arco (17th century) shows an image of Cervantes "curiously" similar to that created by William Kent (London: Tonson, 1738). |
