Commentary | Don Quixote, knelt down, is knighted by the innkeeper, with a book and a sword; also doña Molinera holding the spurs, doña Tolosa (without don Quixote's sword) and a boy (?) with a candle.
Monumental figures; drawing and engraving are quite acceptable. Good use of aquatint for shading; remarkable hand-coloring (although the scene is supposed to be at night). |
Notes | 1 - Copy after Francis Hayman's illustration for London: A. Millar, 1755.
2 - Two characters from the background have been eliminated and the boy with a candle (clearly a boy in Hayman's) now looks more like Sancho (what would be a mistake). 3 - Placed as frontispiece. |
