Commentary | Characters are divided in three groups:
On the right, the main one; surrounding the enchanted head (as a Roman bust), don Quixote thoughtful, Sancho astonished, don Antonio and two friends. On the left, in the foreground and in the background, two more groups that balance the composition. Well-detailed representation of a 18th century bourgeois French house (paintings, furniture, sculptures, carpets...). Theatrical scene with excellent drawing and engraving. |
Notes | 1 - Copy after Coypel's design (first appeared in Paris: Surugue, c. 1735; also copied for La Haye: Pierre de Hondt, 1746).
2 - Same plate first engraved for La Haye: P. Gosse & A. Moetjens, 1744; the references have been changed from Spanish into French and the signatures erased. 3 – Plate XXXI. 4 - Well-placed f.p. 330 according to the "AVIS AU RELIEUR Pour placer les Figures" (vol. VI), but this illustration refers to chapter 62:2 and it´s placed in 32:3. 5 - Plate XXXI appears before plate XXX. |
