Commentary | Two different scenes in the same plate (archaic).
The first one, in the foreground: the members of the braying mayors squadron attack don Quixote and Sancho; the squire is falling from his donkey and don Quixote surrounded by the whole group. Accurate to Cervantes' text, a standard with "un asno como un pequeño sardesco, la cabeza levantada, la boca abierta, y la lengua de fuera, en acto, y postura como si estuviera rebuznando" (27:2). Also with the inscription: "No rebuznaron en valde, el uno y el otro alcalde". The second one, in the background: don Quixote and Sancho running away. Good group illustration; movement and mess well-represented. |
