Commentary | Large plate, which allows figures of great size, but drawing and engraving are not too much good.
At a stable, Sancho, decided to leave Barataria Island, meets with his donkey; Sancho in the center observed by groups of figures on the left and right (theatrical); on the right, the steward, the secretary and Pedro Recio. Tender image of Sancho with his donkey, in keeping with 18th and 19th centuries liking. This plate is better drawn and engraved than plate 15 from the same set: "Don Quichotte Ch. dernier de la Seconde partie" (included in this copy too). |
Notes | 1 - Plate from set "A Paris chez Radigue Rüe St. Jacque avec privilege du Roy" (Paris: chez Jacque Radigues, w/d). Plate 16 of this set is signed by Ricar delineavit and Antonius Radigues Minor Sculpsit.
2 - "Rarity is the exclusive merit of this series, of which the drawing is bad, the engraving worse, and the paper used of the vilest description" (Ashbee 49) |
