Commentary | Well-known scene since Coypel (Paris: Surugue, 1724).
Now, Chodowiecki has eliminated drama and has increased tenderness (see faces, hands...). Basilio and Quiteria's gestures are remarkable; they appear in the center of the composition, embraced. Even Camacho observes the wedding with respect. In the right foreground, highlighted by the engraving, don Quixote and Sancho. |
