Commentary | Well-known scene.
In the foreground, don Quixote, asleep and with a blanket around his arm, fights with the wine skins. In the background, the innkeeper ready to beat him; Sancho Panza, the barber, the priest and others observe them. Sancho's face is grotesque, deformed, influenced by German tradition. This is not one of the best illustrations in the set. |
Notes | 1 - Plate A.IITh. Dated in 1781.
2 - Copied after Weimar/Leipzig: Fritschischen Buchhandlung, 1775; now newly engraved by Berger. |
