Commentary | Once don Quixote has defeated the barber and takes his basin (Mambrino's helmet), Sancho takes his packsaddle too; "Y luego, habilitado con aquella licencia, hizo mutatio capparum..." (21:1).
Don Quixote philosophizes about revenge, which sometimes causes more wrongdoing than the rape of Helen (scene superposed on the helmet; drawing by David). Excellent illustration, resolved with great originality and mastery. |
Notes | 1 - Offset reproduction of Schlotter's original etching/aquatint (Alicante: Rembrandt Editores, 1977-81).
2 - Mutatio capparum: the change from red fur to silken purple hoods made by cardinals at Whitsuntide. |
