Commentary In Sierra Morena, don Quixote, Sancho and the goatherd encounter Cardenio, who begins to observe don Quixote carefully when the knight tries to embrace him.
The figures of the goatherd and Sancho are especially remarkable, very realistic.
Drawing, engraving and shading are excellent.
John Vanderbank represented this scene without the goatherd (London: Tonson, 1738).
Notes 1 - Plate 7. Dated on March, 1798.
2 - Re-engraved copy after Hogarth's illustration for London: Tonson, 1738; this is one of the 6 illustrations rejected by Carteret and Oldfield.
The page refers to John Ireland's work Hogarth Illustrated (vol. 3, 1798); Cushing's copy is from a set of proofs of the 9 illustrations for this edition.
