Commentary | Don Quixote as Knight of the Lions (one lion appears beside him) holding a sword and a sun faced shield.
Behind him, on a semicircle wall, Dulcinea, as a peasant woman ("DVLCINEE DE TOBOSO"), and Sancho, as governor ("SANCHO PANCA GVBERNATOR"). Between them, a medallion with Merlin's portrait ("MERLIN"). Drawing and engraving are simple, but acceptable. |
Notes | 1 - Same plate first engraved for Lyon: Thomas Amaulry, 1711.
2 – Inverted copy after Savery's frontispiece (part II) for Dordrecht: Savery, 1657 (also in Brussels: Mommarte, 1662 and Amberes: Verdussen, 1672-73). 3 - Unsigned. |
