Commentary | Two different scenes in the same plate (archaic):
In the background, the first one: don Quixote attacks the windmills while Sancho tries to stop him. In the foreground, the second one: don Quixote fights with the Basque, while a Basque lady observes them from her carriage. The Basque holding a stool is not accurate to Cervantes' text; it should be a cushion. Drawing and engraving are acceptable, but simple and poor: deficient printing (notice the double line effect). |
Notes | 1 - Same plate first engraved for Lyon: Thomas Amaulry, 1711.
2 – Copy after Savery's illustration for Dordrecht: Savery, 1657 (also in Brussels: Mommarte, 1662 and Amberes: Verdussen, 1672-73); the scene with Sancho beaten by Benedictine monks' servants has not been copied. 3 - Unsigned. |
