Commentary | The barber, disguised with a beard, and the priest, disguised as a woman with a mask, leave the inn to search don Quixote. Also the innkeeper, his wife and Maritornes.
Simple composition, but drawing and engraving are acceptable; good decorative effect as a whole. Original choice; Hogarth's illustration for this episode was refused by Oldfield (London: Tonson, 1738). |
Notes | Accompanied by the poem:
"Disguis'd the Curate, and the Barber roam, to find La Mancha's Knight, and bring him home; From his Romantic Penance to reclaim, And give him Ease, for Visionary Fame". |
