Commentary | Don Quixote, fallen on his knees, threatens the Basque with his sword. Two Basque dames ask don Quixote not to injure the Basque. Sancho, holding the reins of Rocinante, just observes the scene.
Engraving of short lines; sketching effect. Elegant rococo style frame. |
Notes | Accompanied by the poem:
"The brave Biscayan, by our peerless Knight, Inspir'd with fury, is subdu'd in fight. Prone on the ground, his life Don Quixote claims; Yet spares him to oblige the lovely Dames". Thomas Ryder I (London, 1746 - ?, 1810): Burin engraver. He was disciple of James Basire II (burin engraver). Ryder exhibited at the Free Society of London between 1766 and 1767. He engraved the “Portrait of Queen Charlotta Sophia” (Benezit IX, 203). "This set, of which the frames are very elegant, is more curious than beautiful, and is quite English in character" (A68). "Las láminas que adornan esta edición valen poco" (GG194). |
