Commentary | In the right foreground, the housekeeper and the niece preventing Sancho from going into the house; also the greyhound.
In the left background, after hearing Sancho's shouts, don Quixote, the barber and the priest go out of the house. Simple composition, but with excellent drawing (see housekeeper and Sancho's figures in tension) and engraving. |
Notes | 1 – Copy in reduced format after Scotin’s plate with Hayman’s design for London: Millar, 1755.
2 – Same plate first engraved for London: T. Osborne, 1761 (2nd edition of T. Smollet’s translation). 3 - The illustration has been placed in part II, book II, chap. XIV (of this edition or 31:2, where Sancho argues with doña Rodríguez) according to its own reference (Vol. III, p. 268), but the scene belongs to part II, book I, chap. II (of this edition or 2:2). The same mistake was made in London: Millar, 1755. |
