Commentary | Characters are divided in three groups:
On the right, the main one; surrounding the enchanted head (as a Roman bust), don Quixote thoughtful, Sancho astonished, don Antonio and two friends. On the left, in the foreground and in the background, two more groups that balance the composition (don Antonio's wife and friends). Well-detailed representation of a 18th century bourgeois French house (paintings, furniture, sculptures, carpets...). Excellent and detailed drawing and engraving; theatrical composition. |
Notes | 1 - Photomechanical copy (rough, too dark) of the illustration appeared in Amsterdam/Leipzig: Arkstée & Merkus, 1755.
2 - Copy after Coypel's design (first appeared in Surugue: Paris, c. 1735; also copied for La Haye: Pierre de Hondt, 1746). 3 - Same plate first engraved for La Haye: P. Gosse & A. Moetjens, 1744. |
