| Commentary | Countess Trifaldi shows her beard to don Quixote, amazing him and Sancho.
The composition is created with gestures and looks: the Duchess orders two maidens to be quiet; the Duke laughs; Sancho's surprised; don Quixote's astonished. Trifaldín's figure is very remarkable, although he should hold a scimitar, not a mace. Well-detailed drawing engraving; good expressions. |
| Notes | 1 - Photomechanical copy (deficient) of the illustration appeared in Amsterdam/Leipzig: Arkstée & Merkus, 1755.
2 - Copy after Coypel's design (first appeared in Surugue: Paris, 1724; also copied for La Haye: Pierre de Hondt, 1746). 3 - Same plate first engraved for La Haye: P. Gosse & A. Moetjens, 1744. |
