| Commentary | In the center of the composition, don Quixote driving his sword into an enormous wild boar surrounded by hunting dogs; Coypel emphasizes drama in this scene.
In the background, the Duke embracing the Duchess; she looks like a new Diana. In the foreground, but just in one side, the humorous part: Sancho flees away climbing a tree. Excellent drawing and engraving; detailed setting and good expressions. |
| Notes | 1 - Photomechanical copy (quite rough) of the illustration appeared in Amsterdam/Leipzig: Arkstée & Merkus, 1755.
2 - Copy after Coypel's design (first appeared in Surugue: Paris, c. 1728-30; also copied for La Haye: Pierre de Hondt, 1746). 3 - Same plate first engraved for La Haye: P. Gosse & A. Moetjens, 1744. |
