Commentary | In the foreground, with their backs turned to the viewer, as shadows, the Duke, the Duchess, don Quixote and Sancho; they observe the entry of Merlin´s cart with Dulcinea (in the background).
The scene is resolved with simplicity, without details and little accurate to Cervantes´text (Merlin should appear as Death, not as a magician). Drawing and engraving are simple, without proper proportion; light and shadow effects are forced. |
Notes | 1 - Photomechanical copy of the illustration appeared in Amberes: Verdussen, 1672-73 (same plate by unknown engraver first used for Brussels: Mommarte, 1662, which was a copy after Savery's illustration for Dordrecht: Savery, 1657). |
