Commentary | Centrifugal composition (more movement) where don Quixote attacking and destroying Maese Pedro's theater is the center and the other figures form a "V".
On the left, the innkeeper and others. On the right, Sancho, the broken theater and others. Maese Pedro appears from inside the theater and his servant running away. Theatrical and baroque composition; all the characters are placed looking at the viewer and before a big curtain. Drawing and engraving are excellent; remarkable expressions and good light and shadow contrasts. |
Notes | 1 - Photomechanical copy (quite rough) of the illustration appeared in Amsterdam/Leipzig: Arkstée & Merkus, 1755.
2 - Copy after Coypel's design (first appeared in Surugue: Paris, c. 1723; also copied for La Haye: Pierre de Hondt, 1746). 3 - Same plate first engraved for La Haye: P. Gosse & A. Moetjens, 1744. |
