Commentary | In the foreground, don Quixote is prepared to fight with a lion while the lionkeeper opens the gate of the cage.
In the background, Sancho and don Diego de Miranda running away. This composition, with not many changes, will be used until the 20th century. Don Quixote has been drawn crudly. |
Notes | 1 - Photomechanical copy of the illustration appeared in Amberes: Verdussen, 1672-73 (same plate first engraved by anonymous engraver for Brussels: Mommarte, 1662, which was a bad copy after Savery's illustration for Dordrecht: Savery, 1657). |
