Commentary | Frontispiece based on don Quixote's Part II iconography (17:2).
Don Quixote, as Knight of the Lions (one lion appears beside him), holds a sword and a sun faced shield. Behind him, over a semicircle wall, Dulcinea, as an old peasant woman, and Sancho, as governor. Between them, a medallion with Merlin's portrait. Simple drawing and engraving. |
Notes | 1 - Photomechanical copy of the illustration appeared in Amberes: Verdussen, 1672-73 (same plate by unknown engraver first engraved for Brussels: Mommarte, 1662, which was a clumsy copy after Savery's frontispiece for Dordrecht: Savery, 1657). |
