Commentary | The illustration follows Barret's adapted (and very free) translation, quite different from Cervantes' original text.
Barret combines chapters 35:2 (Merlin and Dulcinea's enchantment) with 69:2 (Altisidora's pretended death). The king/judge Rhadamanthus shows Altisidora's "corpse"; Rhadamanthus wears the clothes (robe painted with flames and a mitre with devils) that belong to Sancho. Acceptable drawing style (quick and expressive sketching lines). |
