Commentary | Arrival of Trifaldín before the Duke, the Duchess, don Quixote and Sancho. Trifaldín, gigantic and with a huge scimitar, is preceded by two drum players and one fife player; all they in mourning robes.
Accurate to Cervantes' text, Sancho hides himself behind the Duchess' skirts. Traditionally, this scene is placed in a garden according to this quotation: "vieron entrar por el jardín adelante dos hombres vestidos de luto" (36:2); but Doré has placed it inside the palace. Good illustration. |
