Commentary | "He came up with the procession and reined in Rocinante, who was already anxious enough to slacken speed a little...".
Don Quixote, staying in the middle on the road mounted on Rocinante, orders a procession of penitents to stop and to release the princess (sculpture of the Virgin) they carry; from the background, Sancho, the barber, the priest and others running towards him. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period clothes and details; very remarkable and detail representation of the penitents. Realistic/picturesque style with good light and shadow effects. |
Notes | 1 – After José Jiménez Aranda’s death, his brother, Luis Jiménez Aranda, continued illustrating Don Quixote (part I) following a very similar realistic/picturesque style as the one used by his brother, but, sometimes, his figures lack naturalism. |
