Commentary | ".... and the same instant they observed a beautiful goat spring out of the thicket...".
Don Quixote, Sancho, the barber, the priest, the canon of Toledo and the officers of the Holy brotherhood, while having a rest and lunch, observe the appearance of a goat (Eugenio's). In the background, the ox cart. Remarkable figures and well-resolved scene. Great interest in representing real Spanish characters and accurate period clothes and details. Realistic/picturesque style with good light and shadow effects; notice the landscape, resolved with an impressionist style. |
Notes | 1 – After José Jiménez Aranda’s death, his brother, Luis Jiménez Aranda, continued illustrating Don Quixote (part I) following a very similar realistic/picturesque style as the one used by his brother, but, sometimes, his figures lack naturalism. |
